Company Profile

C & N Hollinrake have operated an archaeological consultancy since 1985, considerably pre-dating the introduction of legislation requiring developers to employ archaeologists (PPG16, Nov. 1991).

Since 1991, C. and N. Hollinrake have carried Personal Liability Insurance, now to the sum of £10,000,000, as well as Employers Liability Insurance. These policies cover our work on archaeological watching briefs, on archaeological evaluation trenches and on open area excavations, both shallow and deep trenches. Fortunately, we have never been required to make a claim on this policy and we are proud of our unblemished safety record, both for our operatives and for the general public.

We have extensive experience of

• a wide variety of archaeological sites, mainly concentrated in Somerset, which provides a wide base of contacts and local knowledge. We have also carried out projects in Dorset, Devon, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset and in South Wales;
• landscape studies coordinating a wide range of different types of evidence including archaeological features, maps, geographical studies, written sources from Saxon charters through to post-medieval histories and place-names;
• church archaeology from major sites like Wells Cathedral, Bristol Cathedral, Ewenny Priory and Glastonbury Abbey to a number of parish churches throughout Somerset;
• sampling, recording and interpreting scientific evidence from a wide range of different environments from wetland sites to cemeteries;
• industrial activities including metalworking sites, medieval and post-medieval mills, tanneries, waterways, canals and maritime trade.

We are specialists in Dark Age archaeology, Nancy Hollinrake having gained an MA in Early Celtic Studies at Cardiff University.

Our aim is to produce a consistently high standard of work at an affordable price.

Our workforce

We have a core team of professional archaeologists in constant employment and our size enables us to react quickly to changing circumstances. However, we also have a larger group of colleagues and associates we can call on whenever a larger workforce is required. We pride ourselves on being responsible employers offering regular wages and peripheral benefits. We do not use, and never have used, zero-hours contracts. We do not use non-paid volunteer workers. We only employ one student at a time, who is always paid for his or her labour.

We also benefit from associations with academics and scientists who provide specialist analyses and services on a job-by-job basis.

Our clients

We believe that our size and experience enable us to provide an efficient, professional and cost-effective service for our clients.

Regular clients include:
English Heritage; The National Trust;
The Crown Estate; Glastonbury Abbey; Glastonbury Tor;
The Dean and Chapter of Wells Cathedral;
Caroe and Partners, Architects, Wells;
Viridor Waste (Somerset);
Aggregate Industries,

and local building, quarrying, and architects firms.

As well as having completed over 450 reports on completed archaeological projects, both directors have produced academic publications and enjoy reputations for high quality research. For this reason, several landowners, including Wessex Water Ltd. and Glastonbury Abbey, have relied on C. & N. Hollinrake to arrange Scheduled Monument Consent with English Heritage.
